Data Governance Playbook

Kabam, a company in the data-rich SaaS video gaming industry, operates with five distinct data teams: Game Data Analytics, Data Science, Digital Marketing Analytics, Central Tech, and Business Intelligence. Each team, while serving unique functions from game development to executive business analysis, reports to different company leaders. This structure led to several operational challenges, including frequent report failures, conflicting information due to logic misalignment among teams, and the absence of a unified version of the truth due to independent data configurations.

To address these issues, Sven spearheaded the initiative to establish a cohesive corporate data governance framework. He organized and led workshops with managers from all data teams to discuss crucial governance topics, including vision, principles, scope, roles, incident management, and change management. The insights and proposals generated from these workshops were subsequently presented to an executive steering committee, culminating in the development of a comprehensive Data Governance Playbook.

Following the implementation of this governance structure, Sven chaired the inaugural meeting of the Data Governance Committee in January 2022. Although the company lacked a pre-project incident reporting baseline, there was an anecdotal reduction in incidents and noticeable improvements in company-wide communication during incidents. The newly integrated data ecosystem fostered collaboration among the data leaders, ensuring consistent application of a unified data dictionary, centralization of data architecture, and enhanced management of data quality and reliability in information delivery.
